About this Course

Aviation is a fast growing industry with new and expanded airports developing worldwide. This course will suit you if you wish to gain an insight into Airport ground operations. You will explore Health and Safety including the legal framework that supports the industry, the Aircraft Turnaround procedure for arriving/departing aircraft and the carriage of Dangerous Goods in the cargo/hold. PRM’s (Passengers with Reduced Mobility) require extra support at Airports including check-in procedures and travel documentation. The importance of exceptional Customer Service will also be explored.

Study Visits

Students will visit:
  • Runway Visitor Park at Manchester Airport and the Concorde Exhibition, including a talk with Swissport who are the global leaders in airport ground services and air cargo handling
  • FlyMe in Barnsley to complete their Aviation Security, Customer Service, Check-in Procedures and Problem Solving practical assessments

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs at grades 9–3 (A*–D), including English Language and Maths. One of English Language or Maths must be grade 9–4 (A*–C). 


Functional Skills Level 1 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 3 (D) and Functional Skills Level 2 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 4 (C) or above.

Assessment

Coursework (assignments/tasks will be set and all deadlines must be met).

You can expect lots of situation-based training to get you thinking on your feet, scenario based assessments/ role plays will include:

Where does this Lead

BTEC Level 3 in Travel and Tourism if you achieve a high grade, alternatively, upon turning 18, you can find work in the appropriate sector.

Facilities
The Sheffield College's City campus is a vibrant college with state-of-the-art facilities including spacious dedicated blending learning classrooms, together with a mock-up aircraft plus a designated passenger check-in area where practical role plays will be carried out. You will be trained by experienced lecturers from the airline industry with links to industry which include British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

Uniform
Uniform is not required, unless on trip/visits. This will be discussed with students at interview/induction.
