This qualification provides an ideal taster for those who may be new to the sector or new to the world of work. It is accessible to learners of all ages who may want to understand more about working in health and social care. It aims to introduce some basic concepts of caring and preparation for employment in the sector. The qualification covers the areas of communication, equality, diversity and inclusion, personal development, role of the social care worker, handling information, health and safety, safeguarding, duty of care and person-centred approaches.
• Communicating in Health and Social Care Organisations
• Principles of Health and Social Care Practice
• Health and Safety in the Health and Social Care Workplace
• Personal and Professional Development in Health and Social Care (this includes 200 hours of work placement, which will be accessed either by the college on the students behalf or a placement that individual students may find themselves, but will be subject to college approval)
• Working in Partnership in Health and Social Care
• Plus additional specialist units to achieve the full award
Students will have one of the following: BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care, BTEC Extended Diploma in Health Studies, BTEC Extended Diploma in Social Care or BTEC Extended Diploma in Health, or 120 UCAS points. In addition GCSE grade C or above in both Maths and English or equivalent is required.
Exams and Coursework
Delivery
All units will be delivered through a combination of lectures, practical workshops, vocational visits and work experience scenarios.
Compulsory work experience must be carried out – a minimum 200 hours in line with Unit 4, PPD.
Assessment Methods
Assessment of units will be by various methods which include assignments, presentations and observations.
Progression
BTEC HND is normally accepted as meeting the minimum educational requirement for pre-registration nursing and midwifery programmes. These qualifications may allow access to various levels of nursing.
For entry to pre-registration midwifery programmes of education, candidates will need to satisfy the educational institution that they have achieved GCSE equivalence standard in English and a science (or mathematics) subject.
Undertaking this qualification may not reduce your training in either the Health or Care Services Training Courses; choosing this route may lengthen your study time for your chosen career.
However, if you do not access your preferred choice or you do not have sufficient UCAS points then choosing this route will help to enhance your academic profile and or improve your employment prospects
