Key Units

Our level one provision in land based has two pathways, an animal provision or a land based provision. Allowing learners to chose their chosen specialism. 

Animal Pathway: This Level 1 qualification in Animal Science is ideal for students who are passionate about animals and want to learn more about how to care for them. You will develop your skills in areas such as animal biology, preparing food and housing, grooming and health checking, as well as how to properly restrain animals. 

Land Based Pathway: This Level 1 qualification in Horticulture is ideal for students who are passionate about plants and want to learn more about how to care for them in a garden setting.

You will develop your skills in areas such as propagation by seed and cuttings, caring for plants, general planting, aftercare, maintenance of grassed areas and borders, use of machinery such as mowers, strimmer's, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers and a range of hand tools. 

In both sectors, you will also cover some personal and social development, including working safely, preparing for progression, working as a team and how to prepare for an interview.

  • Maintaining the health of animals

Land Based Provision Units:
  • Being Organised
  • Developing a personal progression plan
  • Growing plants
  • Caring for and keeping plants healthy 
  • Developing estate maintenance skills 

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs at grade E/2 or above (or acceptable alternatives) including English Language, Maths and Science.
 
Experience of working with animals/plants is desirable, but not essential.

You have to be willing to work in a range of weather/seasons for both pathways!

Assessment

For either pathway, you will be assessed through a mixture of practical and written assignments. 

Where does this Lead

Animal Pathway: Students who achieve an overall Merit grade for the course will be able to progress onto the BTEC Level 2 Technical Diploma in Animal Science if they wish. Other pathways include progression to BTEC Science courses and employment. 

Land Pathway: Students who achieve an overall Merit grade will be able to progress onto the Level 2 Practical Horticulture course.

Animal Pathway:  A BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Land-Based Studies: Animal Science should enable you to progress into careers such as:
  • Animal Sanctuaries
  • Kennels and Catteries
  • Animal Charities
  • Pet Shops
  • Grooming Salons

Land Pathway: A BTEC Introductory Certificate in Land-Based studies should enable you to progress into careers such as: 
  • Garden Centres
  • Parks and Gardens
  • Assistant Gardner
  • Horticultural assistant
  • Apprenticeships

Extra Costs

Some visits will take place for both pathways, you will be expected to have steel toe cap boots or wellingtons and overalls/waterproof clothing. For practical sessions you will need suitable work gloves.

Where offsite visits take place you will be expected to contribute to the cost of entry and travel where applicable. 

Students who are eligible can apply for the Student Support Fund to help with course costs.
