About this Course

A Levels at The Sheffield Sixth Form are your launchpad to university, higher apprenticeships, and ambitious careers. You’ll study in a supportive and academic environment, developing independent study skills, confidence, and subject expertise to help you achieve your future goals.

Key Units

3-Year Programme
This programme enables you to complete A Levels and/or vocational subjects while also undertaking a GCSE maths resit if you have not yet achieved a grade 4. The programme runs over three years.

Pathway to A Levels
This programme is designed to help students improve their GCSE results to achieve the required Average Point Score (APS) for entry into the two-year A Level and vocational programme. It also provides the opportunity to re-sit STEM GCSEs, enabling students to meet the APS entry requirements for STEM A Levels and university. Successful completion of the programme will automatically guarantee an interview for the A Level programme.

Career Pathways
At The Sheffield Sixth Form, we have developed a range of new and exciting career pathways for you to choose to study from that sit across six different sectors.

Each sector is made up of three distinct pathways that directly align to different careers. Each recommended pathway has a carefully selected collection of related A Level subjects that you will study, should you choose to do so. The subjects that we have selected for each sector are based on the skill sets that careers information, universities and employers are highlighting as the most important.

Students will choose one career pathway to study from the sector that interests them most. The career pathways each contains 1 or 2 core A Level subjects that have to be stuied. Students will then choose their third A Level subject from the collection of related subjects in that sector.

Pathways include:
  • Creative Arts
  • Business
  • Law
  • Humanities
  • STEM
  • Writing

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements for A Level programmes are based on your GCSE Average Point Score.

Calculating an Average Point Score (APS):
Add up your total number of GCSE grades for the eight best subjects, including English Language and  Maths together, then divide by the number of subjects you’ve taken.
Diploma/BTEC qualifications will not be counted towards your Average Point Score.

Some individual A Level qualifications also hold additional entry requirements. Please refer to The Sheffield Sixth Form website for more information.

Assessment

Assessment for all A Level programmes will include a mixture of:
  • Coursework
  • Written examination

Where does this Lead

After completing your A Levels, you can progress to university-level study, a higher or degree apprenticeship, or specialist training in your chosen field. Many students go on to study subjects such as law, business, medicine, computing, or the arts both in Sheffield and beyond.

Future Opportunities

A Levels open doors to a huge range of career opportunities. Depending on your subject choices, you could go on to work in fields such as education, healthcare, science, law, business, media, engineering, or creative industries. Your A Levels will give you the knowledge, skills, and confidence to shape your own future.
