About this Course

On this one-year, full-time qualification, you will have the opportunity to learn about the design, development, manufacture and maintenance of engineering products and systems. It is largely classroom-based with one two-hour practical workshop event per week. This qualification will help develop your engineering skills to keep up with rapidly developing technologies. It will give you the knowledge and skills you will need to meet the needs of modern engineering industries.

Key Units

Environmental Awareness (Mandatory Unit)
This unit enables you to acquire the essential knowledge and understanding of the engineering environment in relation to the requirements of current legislation, working safely, personal development and the factors that influence the engineering industry.

Maths & Science
This unit enables you to develop knowledge and understanding of the types of materials and their properties, fundamental numeracy and science applied to engineering practices.

Material Processes
This unit enables you to acquire the essential background knowledge of engineering materials, in particular material properties, applications of materials and the effect of heat treatments.

Fitting & Assembly Techniques
This unit enables you to acquire the essential background knowledge relating to fitting and assembly techniques, tools, and equipment used. You will also learn how to check components and assemblies against specification.

CNC Turning Techniques
This unit enables you to acquire the essential knowledge and practices to program and produce CNC turning skills.

Plan & Carry Out a Project
This unit will enable you to develop knowledge, understanding and skills of how to plan and carry out a project in engineering.

Engineering Design
This unit will enable you to develop knowledge, understanding and skills of producing a design specification, design proposal and design solution of an engineered product.

Maths and English qualifications
You will be required to study Functional Skills or GCSE English or Maths if you do not already hold a minimum of GCSE grade C/4. Many universities and employers ask for a minimum of GCSE grade C/4 in both Maths and English so it's an important qualification to have.

Personal study time
Whilst this qualification is largely classroom based, you are also expected to work independently on project work away from the college.

Extra Costs

You will be required to supply your own PPE for the course (boots and overalls).

Students in financial hardship may be eligible to apply to the Student Support Fund for support with related costs.
