Adam Ahmed
Sustainability Champion
Here's why Adam was nominated by their tutor:
"Three of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals are: No Poverty; Zero Hunger; and Reduced Inequalities. These goals are the reason why I am nominating Adam for the sustainability award.
Adam is an extremely talented young journalist, who is passionate and engaged in his local community and in politics. He is particularly interested in the topics of class, social justice and inequality. Recently he has written pieces about people living in fuel poverty in his local area, Darnall, and he has contributed a piece about the rising reliance on food banks to our end of year magazine, Quote. For that, he interviewed Sheffield Labour councillor Mark Jones. Here is a quote from the conclusion of his story: “The important thing to note is that the ambition is not to witness the rise of the number of food banks but to make them unnecessary. The ambition is to have a society where people can buy the food they eat using their hard earned cash. The ambition is to have a society where volunteers have new charities to pursue.”
He is engaged with local politics and often reaches out to Sheffield City Councillors to interview them; particularly members of the Green Party, and he has had a lot of success with this. He’s not afraid to speak up and ask difficult questions. This is particularly relevant to Adam, as a student who receives SSF and does not come from an affluent background. He has aspirations to become a political reporter or politician and to continue pursuing his interests, using his platform to raise awareness and showcase solutions.
So, while this nomination is not about Adam’s initiatives with recycling plastic, or the more traditional ways we think of ‘sustainability’, I think he is a perfect example of someone who embeds sustainability into his work and life in a way that is really relevant to the Sheffield College community, and he will continue to do this in his life and career going forward."
