Zahra Heidarmehrabipoor
Adult Achievement Award
Here's why Zahra was nominated:
"Zahra (known as Helen) is on course to progress to Veterinary Science at Bristol University in September. She has made outstanding progress on the Access to HE Diploma (Medicine). (This is a new course that is running for the first time this year at the Sheffield College). Helen is academically excellent and is expected to achieve Distinctions in all graded units. She is very dedicated and well-motivated and actively participates in all class activities. She is committed to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for her peers and she readily supports and helps them in many ways, from explaining the scientific concepts well to giving emotional support.
Helen moved to the UK from Iran 3 years ago at the age of 18. She has rapidly learned English from nothing to a high standard in this short time. Her achievement on the Access to HE Diploma is particularly notable considering that she is studying in her second language so soon after starting to learn it.
In the conflict in Iran, a family member has been injured and there have been difficulties in contacting family and friends there, but Helen has shown great resilience.
Helen balances study with other commitments very well. She volunteers on a farm and has been gaining experience in veterinary practices. Helen is a talented artist and enjoys painting portraits and animals."
