Libby Gratton
Events, Hospitality and Food Technology Student of the Year
Here's why Libby was nominated:
"Libby’s journey over the past four years is a testament to her dedication and remarkable work ethic. She joined our department on an Entry Level Catering course and has systematically climbed the educational ladder, completing a supported Level 2, and Level 2 Food and Beverage. Today, she is excelling in Level 3 Hospitality Supervision and Leadership. This steady ascent shows a rare level of commitment to her craft and a refusal to settle for anything less than her full potential.
Perhaps most impressive is Libby’s personal growth regarding her mental health. Having struggled with anxiety throughout her life, the transition to Front of House duties was a significant hurdle. However, Libby didn't just "get through" it; she mastered it.
She has developed her interpersonal skills to a professional standard, managing her anxiety so effectively that she now manages the restaurant with poise and efficiency. She handles complex situations with peers and customers alike, showing a level of maturity and confidence that seemed unreachable four years ago.
Libby’s path hasn't been without its academic challenges. She has worked tirelessly to balance the demands of her main qualification with: Functional Skills & GCSEs: Balancing core subjects alongside vocational training. Self-Reflection: While she initially found the reflective elements of her course challenging, she has shown incredible grit. Feedback Integration: She is a student who truly listens. By acting on feedback, she has seen a marked and consistent improvement in the quality of her work.
Libby is the "go-to" student within our department. She is consistently the first to volunteer when extra help is needed, driven by a genuine eagerness to impress and a conscientious attitude toward her teammates. She has evolved from a quiet student into a leader who isn't afraid to tackle difficult issues head-on with empathy and understanding.
Libby Gratton embodies the spirit of this award. She has transformed from a shy, anxious learner into a confident, capable supervisor. It has been an absolute pleasure to have her in our department for the last four years, and we can think of no one more deserving of the title Student of the Year."
